Controlled Document

I don't understand when to use the various elements other than "Activities" "Decisions" "Start-End Points" "People". So what is a controlled document and how does it differ from any other document? And when would I use it in my processes? Same with Database, Record, Controlled Record. I don't want to miss out on using the powerful tools. I notice that once you create an element, you can't change the type of element it is (like from a decision to an activity). Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re:Controlled Document

Steve-
I'm new to the program as well, however I believe a "Controlled Document" is a document that does not change, such as a checklist, or expense report. In my project, an example is a Bug Report. Even if there is a custom project for a client, each Bug Report will be filled out the same way, and have the same information requirements. This differs from a "Document", which may have different content depending on the client (such as a Requirements Document, where for a custom project these requirements would change). The same goes for a Controlled versus Uncontrolled Record.

If someone more experienced with this program could verify if my understanding is correct, that would be great. I'm actually working on creating a little demo process that exercises all of the shapes so that the other people involved in my project can understand them and show me what they want me to use. Any help with clarification of some shapes would be useful for me (and anyone else new to the product). Thank you!
